Cutover or staged migration?
Mailboxes, calendars and files, moved to Microsoft 365 and set up to work on day one.

There are two broad ways to move email to Microsoft 365: move everyone at once (a cutover), or move people in groups over a short period (a staged migration).

Cutover migration

Everyone moves together in a single transition. It’s the simplest approach and works well for smaller teams, where moving all mailboxes at once is manageable.

Staged migration

Mailboxes move in batches rather than all at once. This suits larger organisations, where moving everyone in one go would be disruptive, and it lets the move happen in planned groups.

Which one for you?

As a rule of thumb, smaller businesses do a cutover and larger ones go staged — but the source system and how your email is set up also matter. When you order, we look at your source and user count and recommend the approach that causes the least disruption. Talk to our team to discuss it.
